Contracts and authorities

17 weeks before
Check the notice period: three months to the end of a month
That is the default for an open-ended lease under the Tenancy Act. A fixed-term lease can normally not be ended early unless the contract says so.
14 weeks before
Give notice in writing and keep the receipt
Send it so that you can show when it arrived. The notice period starts at the turn of the month.
13 weeks before
Arrange viewings for the next tenant

Sign the new lease

Deposit: up to six months' rent on a separate account in your name
The account is in your name at a bank, the landlord pays for it, and the interest is yours. Money into the landlord's own account is not a deposit.

Internet: the building often decides the provider
Fibre belongs to the property, and in a housing cooperative broadband is sometimes part of the shared costs. Installation can take weeks.

Electricity: two contracts, the grid rent and the supplier
The grid company follows the address and cannot be chosen; the supplier can. The change runs through Elhub and takes a few days.

Handover: fill in a record with meter readings and photos
The Consumer Council has a standard form. Both sides sign it, and it is what settles the deposit at the end.

Report the move to the tax administration within eight days
The National Registry decides which municipality you belong to. The report is free at skatteetaten.no with electronic ID.

Housing cooperative: report the move to the board
The board or the manager needs the new resident registered, hands out keys to the shared rooms and often wants the lift booked for moving day.
7 days after
Mail forwarding: Posten charges for it
Reporting the move to the National Registry does not forward any post. Order forwarding at Posten, and change the address at the parcel carriers.
7 days after
Public bodies get the address from the National Registry
Tax, the vehicle register, the health service and the pension authority all read the address there. You do not report it again.

Resident parking: apply again at the new address
The permit follows the address and the zone, not you. In the cities it is applied for at the municipality and paid per year.
10 days after
Regular GP: it does not follow the move by itself
You keep the doctor you have until you change. A change is made on helsenorge.no and can be done twice a year.
2 weeks after
Kindergarten and school: apply in the new municipality
The main kindergarten intake has a deadline of 1 March for a place in August. School follows the nearest-school rule.
