Contracts and authorities

17 weeks before
Check the notice period: three months unless the contract says otherwise
The Civil Code gives a tenant of housing three months' written notice on an open-ended lease. Most contracts shorten it to one month, so read yours.
14 weeks before
Give notice in writing and keep proof of delivery
A message with a date and a confirmation of receipt is enough in practice. Keep it until the deposit comes back.
13 weeks before
Arrange viewings for the next tenant

Sign the new lease

Deposit: usually one month, set by the contract
The law does not cap it. The amount, what it covers and how it comes back are what the contract says, so write it down.

Furniture and building waste do not belong in the yard containers. The municipality or the building manager names the place and the days.

Internet: check which providers reach the building
In blocks of flats the choice depends on the cable in the entrance. Moving an existing contract is usually cheaper than a new one.

Draw a furniture plan per room, take measurements

Test the internet connection

Electricity: re-register the account with the supplier
Since the market split, the distribution operator follows the address and the supplier is chosen. Read the meter on the handover day and put the number in the record.

Gas: two accounts, the network and the supplier
The distribution company and the supplier bill separately. Both accounts have to be re-registered to the new resident.
1 day before
Handover record: meter readings, furniture, photos
The record is a normal annex to the lease in Ukraine. Both sides sign it, and it decides about the deposit at the end.

Record and report defects on moving in

Building association: intercom, lift, parking
The association or the manager sets the code for the intercom, the times for moving furniture and the rules for the yard.

Declare the new residence within 30 days
The declaration goes through the Diia app or a public service centre. Since 2022 it is a declaration, not a stamp in a passport.
7 days after
Mail forwarding at Ukrposhta is a paid service
Declaring the new residence forwards nothing. Order the forwarding service and change the address in the parcel apps.
10 days after
The ID card stays as it is, the address lives in the register
The plastic passport card carries no printed address, so a move does not mean a new document. A certificate from the register proves the address.
2 weeks after
School and kindergarten: the address decides the catchment
Every school has a territory it has to admit from, and the first-grade application runs in May. Kindergarten places go through the municipal queue.

Tell the bank, employer and insurers

Update subscriptions and delivery services
2 weeks after
Family doctor: sign a new declaration near the new address
The declaration is not tied to the registered residence and can be changed at any time, but a doctor close by is worth the change.
